About the Series

Hugh of Emblin is a struggling student at Skyhold, the greatest mage academy in the world. He has an unusual affinity — his spellbook is bonded to his body rather than being an external tool. Under the mentorship of a powerful (and eccentric) older mage, he and a small group of students train across seven books, growing from academy students into continent-level threats.

What sets Mage Errant apart is the ensemble cast and the creative magic system. Each member of Hugh’s group has a different affinity (crystal, stone, dream magic, planar gates) and their progression involves finding novel applications rather than just getting “more power.” The series rewards readers who enjoy watching characters think their way through problems using specific, well-defined tools.

This works for readers who want academy progression with genuine friendship dynamics, creative magic, and a completed story. The tone is lighter than Bastion or Cradle — there’s humor, warmth, and found family throughout. The scope escalates from school-level problems to world-threatening events by the end. The tradeoff: the first two books read as YA-adjacent in tone and complexity; the series matures significantly from book 3 onward. If you need the edge and intensity of darker progression fantasy from page one, the opening may feel too soft.
