About the Series

Jin Rou is reincarnated into a xianxia world and decides he wants no part of the sect politics, face-slapping, and endless fighting. He quits his sect, buys a farm, and focuses on living a good life. His animals gain sapience through his inadvertent qi cultivation. The rooster becomes a martial artist. The fish becomes a philosopher. The farm becomes one of the most powerful locations in the region purely through Jin’s cultivation of the land and his relationships.

Beware of Chicken works because it’s simultaneously a parody of cultivation fiction and a sincere story about community, found family, and choosing peace. The humor comes from the gap between xianxia conventions (arrogant young masters, tribulations, sect warfare) and Jin’s aggressively normal approach to life. But it’s not purely comedic — the character work is genuine, and the emotional moments earn their weight.

This series is for readers who want something warm and character-driven within the cultivation framework. It’s also specifically rewarding if you’ve read standard xianxia first, because the subversion lands harder when you know what’s being subverted. The tradeoff: progression is slow and indirect. Jin gets stronger, but it’s never the focus. If you want Number Go Up dopamine or intense combat, this isn’t it. The pacing in later books also loosens considerably as the cast expands.

  • Beneath the Dragoneye Moons by Selkie Myth — Fantasy progression with a female MC who values healing over fighting; similar warmth
  • The Wandering Inn by pirateaba — Enormous slice-of-life fantasy with ensemble cast and similar “community as power” themes
  • Cooking With Wild Game (light novel) — If the “isekai person applies modern thinking to a new world” angle is the appeal, different genre but similar vibes
